Double page story

Here is an article people from the forums have been begging that we publish for years! Who is/are the king or rock? Let’s look at the contenders, Queen, Slash from guns n roses and U2. Let’s start with queen one of the most misconceived bands there is, did you think it was a band or like most people did you think it was the stage name of the legend Freddie mercury? The band consists of Freddie on the piano and lead vocalist; Brian may on the guitar and vocals, John deacon on the bass and last but not least Rodger Taylor on the drums and vocals. Why does queen deserve the title of kings of rock? Lets see what the band has achieved over the years, approximately 300million record sales this has made queen a house hold name, there is hardly a single person that has never heard a queen song. They must have done something right, their songs have been used in multiple multimillion viewer adverts, like team GB’s celebration video, Cadburys dairy mik advert., and Google’s advert with under pressure, this is just a few out of hundreds of ads that queens songs have been used on.  But back to personal favourites id have to say that my favourite is Don’t stop me now, it’s just such a pick up song , no matter how your feeling queen will cheer you up ! I think Freddie would be proud to have known that he is regarded as the 58th greatest brit of all time, what a accolade to have! Going up to the girl (or boys in freddies case) and saying hey I’m the 58th best person in the history of Britain.
Slash… what can i say I personally think he is the basis for the rock star stereotype, that curly hair the top hat the glasses that hardly ever seem to come off and the Pièce de résistance being his leather jacket. The accolades he holds? Times voted him the 2nd best electric guitar player of all time behind the one and only Jimmy Hendrix oh btw you lot know how we at Freat love riffs well the Guns N’ Roses song “ Sweet child o’ mine” was voted to have the best riff of all time, now that is something to be proud of something that we at freat really find impressive! So we decided to test these findings on some unsuspecting victims around the freat publishing office, from journalists to editors and even the winners of last week’s competition to win a guided tour of our head office even harry the 7 year old son of one of the winner recognised and went full in on an air guitar solo of biblical proportion, hmm I think we might have to start a competition up on the forums looking for the best of the best air guitarists. Sales wise? Well Guns N’ Roses first studio album appetite for destruction has reached sales in excess of 30 million worldwide, now that is something to be proud off not only has it sold a lot it’s done amazing with critics, its been featured in the book 1001 albums you must hear before you die now that is something that you should have put on your headstone “I made one of the greatest albums ever made”.  My personal favourite I hear you say? Sorry to say I have to go mainstream and say “Paradise city” its just so catchy sorry guys that I bought it up but hey you’re going to be humming a great song for the next week!
Now to the band that contain what could be one of the biggest humanitarian there is can you guess? No? Well its U2 containing Paul hewson better known as Bono, comparing them to Lead zeppelin you guy must be asking why I picked U2 over them? I just think that U2 have a lot more emotionally deep lyrics, like the songs written about the loss of his mother. Not only that but the way they smashed their way into the music industry, in 1978 they won a talent show with a price of £500 pounds and a session in a recording studio to record a demo that would be heard by a record label. Before this they were unheard of now in 2012 they have sold over 150million records setting them pretty high up in the world of music, hmm also they made a statement saying that they were “reapplying for the job of the best band in the world” hmm I think somebody tipped them off about my nomination *scratches chin*, going back to bono the money that he has made he has spent on millions of people, he is a philanthropist meaning that he cares about all the ill and needy this is building up there kudos from me ! Here is a real fact that will get you buzzing out of 34 nomination U2 has won 22 of those that is more than any band IN HISTORY out of all the accolades I have spoken about I must say that is the most impressive I have ever seen!
Now who do I think is the kind of rock? Its simple…Queen. I must say I am very strong minded on this subject, I think that Queen is an amazing band that has deserved everything that they got and more, they spent more time in UK charts than any band including the beatles… that absolutely amazing! Freddie did an amazing job in his short life only living to the age of 45, he died like a martyr, his death from AIDS caused a massive worldwide publication of AIDS the mercury phoenix trust was set up now millions of pounds has been spent preventing the spread and slowing down the effects of HIV. Also I must say I love how in the Olympic closing ceremony that Freddie was shown singing bohemian rhapsody  along with 80,000 other people from across the world.

New media

I will market my magazine in a new media friendly way, this will include making it available for most smart phone, having it it available for purchase on the newsstand on all apple devices. I will also add it onto  website, this will alow you to digitally view the magazine possibly download a PDF version a file that is compatible on most digital devices.

Promo

How will i promote my magazine?

I personally think online adds will be the most effective way, from this i could give possible consumers a small taster bite of my magazine deliberately leaving them on a hook.
Internet adds would be the most viewed advertisement method i could use for my particular audience, i think another possible method could be to give out a free gig guide at gigs making sure that they are written in first person, this should help draw some people into looking further into the magazine possibly starting a subscription.

Colour

These colors are complementary and i think they would work great on my magazine. along with black and grey .

Insitution

All these aspects are pointless if you pick the wrong distribution date/frequency, a weekly magazine will thinner and more up to date than a monthly that will be thick and possibly out dated, as the artists are famous this means that things happen and blow over before a weekly magazine would be able to comment on it, also monthly magazines are typically a lot thicker and cost more but are outdated.

Magazines are usually published by relevant publishers, like IPC Media, this publishes NME where as Bauer media publishes Mojo, the music genres that are published are relevant to the rest of the portfolio, as

Diary

Today i continued with fonts, i am looking for a nice BOLD and big font that will catch the eyes of possible buyers, to do this i have looked at fonts that where/are used by rock/metal/bass artists, you can see my font under the Names post, i still haven't decided what font to use i will carry out a survey on a relevant group of test subjects for the specific genre.

Diary

Last lesson i decided to focus my attention on names, i used prezzi to show a sort of brain storm of relevant images, eventally i decided to mix Fret ( on a guitar) with Threat( danger ) to make freat, i decided this will be the name of my magazine, its uses 2 relevant things to the genre to make a good name. I think i might start to look at fonts from my mast head while keeping it relevant.

MoodBoard

This mood board is a small look into my mind, this will help me pick a genre of music to use in my magazine and possibly name ideas eg. The warning sign meaning danger and the guitar, Danger is a threat to your life and guitar's have frets on the fret board, these two sound the same there for i could so something clever and make them into one word, my magazine name Freat.

Codes and conventions

ALL music magazines have a main image on the front cover, this contains a Zeitgeist (spirit of the times) this means that its mainly current artists that are shown on the front page. Through out the magazine there will be freebies these could include things that are relevant to genre of music that the magazine refers to, these freebies could be like gig guides, free CDs and posters of artists. These gigs are a form of direct advertisement, this means that the band promoter has payed for there gig to be shown, another form of indirect advertisement would be if a band or record label sent a demo/pre-release of a new album, the magazine might if they like it publish a review, this is indirect as the magazine wasn't payed by the artist to do the review they get the money from the fan base of the artist that will buy the issue for the information about the new album or single. Typically in a music magazine there will be a interview with a artist, most of the time this will be a double page spread with one page being a main image and the second the volume of text. Lists are a very common thing to see in a magazine this could be official like UK Top 40 or a fan vote from a previous issue.

Reviews are really common as said before they help to add to the size of the fan base, this increased fan base will help add to the income from sales, this fan base for the artist/band in question can be the same as who would normally buy the magazine or it could be that of a different. When looking at a audience there are 4 main aspects, age, gender, genre. With genre there is usually a link to age as you are not very likely to find a 10year old listing to heavy metal yet they might read magazines.

21/9/12

In lesson: I was doing a double page spread ananlisis with ashley, we used prezi to let us both edit it at the same time, i looked at the main image and suggested that due to the background being that of a quarry that they where saying how they are isolated from other and that they are different.

Home: i compiled a list of music magazines that i could use to compare. I will also use them as inspiration for my own and i will give credit to the magazines where i used them.

Contents 3

NME contents page here, by the look they have used there article names as a tactic to pull the reader in , like said here :

This is a very contravercial thing to say, the beatles have be said to be the best music band to come from england, this magazine has dilibertly used these big name bands to cause a conflict in the readers mind, also the editor has added a sense of personality by saying "Hey, it's not our call...".

The sub heading have sort of been merged with the background, this makes the reader have to look carefully like a second glance, Throughout the contents page it is easy to see that the magaine relies on its loyal customers/fan base, if you look at the wording you will see that they always use opinions like
"this weeks best gigs" and "the uk's number 1 gig guide" these are all opinion that hopefully they share with there fans.

Contents page 2

Kerrang appears to always follow a set format, contents in top left or right, main image taking up half the page, and text taking up the bottom. Kerrang is written in its own special font, it contains important information like the issue number date and information to start a subscription. The colour scheme seems to be yellow, white, black. All these colours are good contrasts on each other. I personally like how they have put the stars next to cover stories i may possibly use this in my own. The black boxes anround the subtitles are a great way to make them stand out, you have this bright light yellow on a dark black box that pretty much drags your eyes. The font that they use (the one that has parts missing) i think is very effective, this idea that its not a perfect boring font with everything filled in, the missing bits give it some texture.Something that this magazine does thats quite rare is that the deputy editor has signed the bottom, this isnt always a good think if something controverisal is published people will be after him.

Contents 1

The masthead it at the top, followed by the citys of london memphis and okemah, these all tie into the magazine like okemah is best know for the artist Woody Guthrie. The high angle shot gives the reader a almost conflicting view on this person for one the high angle is usually used to show how someone is vulnerable / powerless however this man has his hands behind his back and the facial expression is blank , this makes the reader question what the man is thinking he doesn't look scared he just looks blank, quite creepy.

Double page spread2

This double page uses alot of contrast using white on black and gold to make some stand out even more, the gold could give connotations of how good something is as gold medal is 1st place there the best so implying that neil young is the best. Famous peoples names have also been made gold this is to draw the readers eyes into this story and prevent them just flicking past. Like most double pages this contains a bold large quote and a main image taking up a page.

Double page

The font used/ black boxes gives connotations of being crazy/psycho, we have been injected with this idea that old murders used this sort of text, this makes it seem quirky, this is followed with the main image, it way she is leaning one way with her head facing the other makes it almost look pointless. The text looks like it has been formatted around the picture however the last line goes over her elbow. The editor used a large "i to drag the reader to the start of the article, its set out in 4 small columns.

Front cover 3

Masthead
This masthead is strange compared to others, most mast heads are solid colors however this one uses tones and blending, this is clever as each issue has a different color scheme and the masthead color fits in with it, the font used is BIG and bold this allows the reader to easily identify the magazine from others.

Sell lines
This magazine for some reason lets its sell lines overlap the mast head, big names like eminem lil wayne and jay-z are in bold to help catch the eyes of there fans, this increases the fan size and possibly boost sales of that issue, the number 50 is in bold to signify just how much there is.

Main image

Surprisingly they have let the main image be the top layer, this gives the reader the impression of eminems importance, the look he is giving is straight at the lenses making it feel like that he is looking straight at you, the facial expression almost makes you question what he is thinking about its a very deeply encoded image.

Log 17/9/12

Today i switched classes and started to work on my course work, i started to look up the major music magazines that are out there, i started to analyse a copy of mojo. Starting on the front cover, i cropped it in paint then uploaded to blogger under each subheading that is relevant, for the contents page  i looked at a issue from 2009.

Double page Prezi

Front Cover 2

NME

Masthead

NME however being a popular magazine doesnt rely on a font that will be easily recognized, its a very bog standard font with two outlines to further empheris the name. The masthead also follows the colour scheme of the magazine with black white and red.

Sell lines

The sell lines in this magazine use different fonts, colors, and separators / underline, theses all are used to emphasis some parts that are used to catch the readers attention like bait on a hook, this will be used to pull them into reading and ultimately buying it. The editor used the contraction "we've" this gives a feeling that more personal and down to earth, readers like this.

Main image

This main image is weird, it almost looks edited, the taller man's eyes appear to be looks straight at the camera like the smaller man even tho the difference in height. This stance (back to back) is very standard shows how they are linked and look after each other, the image was taken to be personal that is why it is a close up to emphasize possible there most recognizable feature there face.

                                             Masthead

The mast head of a magazine is extremely important, it has to be a catchy looking font that will be easily rembered as it is what the readers will look for when trying to identify the magzine, this font is big bold and has a drop shadow.

Sell lines

These sell lines use a variation in the font, they make the key artists bold to attract a possible audience from there fans. The white font was used to contract on the dark background, this makes the font stand out, it also folows the magazines colour theme where most if not all text is white.

Main image

The main image is off Brian Jones high angle shot gives readers a sense of him being down to earth, and this image if very centrlised around his eyes, the eyes are important as it is associated with the soul/person inside. The whole page is the image. The image may have been manipulated as the shoulders apear to be blury, depth a feild.

Prelimary Task

The preliminary task was to make a school magazine. The first thing I did was think up a relevant colour scheme, the audience being school children I thought it would be good to link it to the schools logo, I used the exact same shade of yellow that is used in the logo, I did this by using the colour picker tool on the logo that was in one of the pictures. I then cropped the logo from the bus by using the quick mask tool and the colour range select tool, I then decided on what font I should use, with the schools logo being a stag I thought I would give it a font that would look normal next to it, I went for  “Forte” it’s very soft and italic.
The picture is picked is like a zoomed out mid shot, I positioned this to have the school logo in sight, the boy is dressed smartly possibly could be seen as a role model to younger students that may read the magazine. At the bottom of the page I added a bar that contains important information like the issue number, date and ways to contact the magazine. Due to magazine being targeted at high school students the target audience would be 12-16, this means that social networking sites would be a great way to get in contact.

I added drop shadows to my mast head and to the school logos on each side this gives it a more 3D effect
The strapline is “Haydon’s only magazine written for STUDENTS by STUDENTS” I picked this as it will let the readers relate to the magazine. The capital letters in “students” was used to emphasise and make it stand out this could help attract possible readers, this can be seen in professional newspapers like Tabloids like “the sun” and broadsheets like “the guardian”.
